Vaginal Infections (Vaginitis)

Vaginitis, or vaginal infections, refers to inflammation or infection of the vagina that can cause discomfort, discharge, and odor. Here’s what you should know about the different types of vaginitis and how they are treated:

  1. Bacterial vaginosis (BV): BV is the most common type of vaginitis and is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. Symptoms may include a fishy odor, thin discharge, and itching or burning. BV is typically treated with antibiotics.
  2. Yeast infections: Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. Symptoms may include thick, white discharge, itching, and burning. Yeast infections are typically treated with antifungal medication.
  3. Trichomoniasis: Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Symptoms may include yellow-green discharge, itching, and burning. Trichomoniasis is typically treated with antibiotics.
  4. Atrophic vaginitis: Atrophic vaginitis is caused by a decrease in estrogen levels and is most common in postmenopausal people. Symptoms may include dryness, itching, and burning. Treatment may include estrogen therapy or vaginal moisturizers.
  5. Noninfectious vaginitis: Noninfectious vaginitis can be caused by factors such as allergic reactions, irritation from soaps or detergents, or hormonal changes. Symptoms may include itching, burning, and discharge. Treatment may include avoiding irritants, using topical steroids, or hormone therapy.

If you experience symptoms of vaginitis, it’s important to see a healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment. They may perform a physical exam and take a sample of vaginal discharge to determine the type of infection. Treatment options may include medication or lifestyle changes to address the underlying cause of the infection. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as wearing breathable underwear or avoiding irritants may help to prevent future infections.
