Preventing Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when abnormal cells in the lungs grow and divide uncontrollably, forming a tumor. Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for about 80% of all cases. Other risk factors for lung cancer include exposure to radon, asbestos, and air pollution.

Here are some ways to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer:

  1. Quit smoking or don’t start: The best way to prevent lung cancer is to not smoke or use tobacco products. If you do smoke, quitting is the most important thing you can do to reduce your risk.
  2. Avoid secondhand smoke: Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases the risk of lung cancer. Avoid being around others who smoke, and if you live with a smoker, encourage them to quit.
  3. Test your home for radon: Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can accumulate in homes and increase the risk of lung cancer. Test your home for radon and take steps to reduce exposure if necessary.
  4. Protect yourself from workplace hazards: If you work in an industry that exposes you to asbestos, diesel exhaust, or other harmful substances, take steps to protect yourself and follow workplace safety guidelines.
  5. Reduce exposure to air pollution: Air pollution has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. To reduce exposure, avoid exercising near busy roads and reduce your use of products that contribute to air pollution, such as gasoline-powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers.
  6. Eat a healthy diet: While a healthy diet won’t prevent lung cancer on its own, it can help support overall health and reduce the risk of other types of cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help keep your body healthy and reduce the risk of cancer.
  7. Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can also help support overall health and reduce the risk of cancer. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week.
