More Sleep May Help Prevent Weight Gain

Getting adequate sleep is an essential aspect of overall health, and recent studies suggest that it may also help prevent weight gain. Research has shown that sleep deprivation can lead to an increased appetite and cravings for high-calorie foods, which can contribute to weight gain and obesity.

One study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that getting less than seven hours of sleep per night was associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity. This study also found that participants who got more sleep had a lower body mass index (BMI) and were less likely to gain weight over time.

Another study published in the journal Sleep found that when participants were allowed to sleep for an additional hour per night over a six-week period, they lost an average of 3 pounds without making any other changes to their diet or exercise routine.

While the exact relationship between sleep and weight gain is still being studied, it is clear that getting enough sleep is important for maintaining a healthy weight. Adults should aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night to promote overall health and wellness.
