Iris Freckles
Iris freckles, also known as iris nevi, are pigmented spots on the iris of the eye. They are similar to freckles that can occur on the skin, but they are found on the iris, which is the colored part of the eye. Iris freckles are typically harmless and do not affect vision.
Iris freckles can vary in size and color, and they may be present in one or both eyes. They are caused by a buildup of melanocytes, which are cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes.
While iris freckles are usually benign, it is important to have them checked by an eye doctor to rule out the possibility of a more serious condition, such as iris melanoma. Iris melanoma is a rare form of eye cancer that can occur in people with iris freckles. Symptoms of iris melanoma include changes in the size, shape, or color of the freckle, as well as blurred vision or other vision changes.
Regular eye exams are important for detecting and monitoring any changes in iris freckles or other eye conditions. If you notice any changes in your vision or in the appearance of your iris freckles, you should contact your eye doctor right away.
