Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of the toenail grows into the skin surrounding it. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and redness. Ingrown toenails are most common in the big toe but can occur in any toe. They can be caused by a number of factors including improperly fitting shoes, toenail injuries, or improper toenail trimming.

In some cases, ingrown toenails can lead to infection. Symptoms of infection can include increased pain, redness, warmth, and pus. In severe cases, an infection can spread to the bone and lead to more serious health problems.

Treatment for ingrown toenails may involve soaking the foot in warm water several times a day, wearing open-toed shoes, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers. If an infection is present, antibiotics may be needed. In some cases, a doctor may need to remove the portion of the toenail that is causing the problem.

Preventing ingrown toenails can be done by properly trimming toenails straight across, avoiding shoes that are too tight, and wearing protective footwear during sports or other activities that may lead to toenail injuries.
