Compression Stockings
Compression stockings, also known as support stockings, are specialized hosiery designed to help improve blood circulation in the legs. They are tight-fitting, stretchy socks that apply pressure to the lower legs, ankles, and feet. The pressure is greatest at the ankle and gradually decreases as the stocking goes up the leg.
Compression stockings work by helping the muscles and veins in the legs push blood back up to the heart. This can help prevent blood from pooling in the legs, which can lead to conditions like varicose veins, spider veins, and blood clots.
There are several different types of compression stockings, including:
- Graduated compression stockings: These are the most common type of compression stocking. They are tighter around the ankle and gradually get looser as they go up the leg.
- Anti-embolism stockings: These are specialized stockings that are designed to help prevent blood clots from forming after surgery or when a person is bedridden.
- Non-medical compression stockings: These stockings are often sold as fashion accessories and are designed to provide a mild amount of compression. They may not be suitable for people with more serious circulatory problems.
Compression stockings come in different lengths, ranging from knee-high to thigh-high and pantyhose-style stockings that cover the entire leg and torso. They are available in a variety of sizes and compression levels, so it’s important to choose the right size and compression level for your needs.
Compression stockings can be purchased over-the-counter or with a prescription from a doctor. They are generally safe for most people to use, but it’s important to talk to your doctor if you have any medical conditions or concerns about using compression stockings.
