Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that affects the toenails, causing them to become thickened, discolored, and brittle. It is caused by various types of fungi, which thrive in warm, moist environments, such as those found inside shoes and socks.
Symptoms of toenail fungus may include thickened, discolored, or yellowed toenails, nail that lifts off the nail bed, brittle or crumbly nails, distorted nail shape, foul odor, and a build-up of debris under the nail.
Toenail fungus can be challenging to treat and may require long-term management. Treatment options include over-the-counter antifungal creams and ointments, prescription antifungal medications, and laser therapy. In severe cases, surgical removal of the affected nail may be necessary.
To prevent toenail fungus, it is essential to practice good foot hygiene, such as keeping feet clean and dry, wearing shoes that allow for good air circulation, changing socks regularly, and avoiding sharing nail clippers or other personal care items.
