Types of Cataract Surgery

There are two main types of cataract surgery: phacoemulsification (phaco) and extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE).

1. Phacoemulsification: This is the most common type of cataract surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small incision on the side of the cornea and inserts a tiny probe into the eye. The probe emits ultrasound waves that break up the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then suctioned out of the eye. Once the cloudy lens is removed, the surgeon replaces it with an artificial lens.
2. Extracapsular cataract extraction: This is a more traditional type of cataract surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a larger incision on the side of the cornea and removes the cloudy lens in one piece. Once the cloudy lens is removed, the surgeon replaces it with an artificial lens.

Both types of cataract surgery are typically done on an outpatient basis and do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. The type of surgery recommended will depend on the patient’s individual needs and the severity of their cataracts.
