Beware of Antibacterial Soaps

Antibacterial soaps have been marketed as a solution to help protect against germs and bacteria. However, recent studies have shown that the overuse of antibacterial soaps may actually be harmful to both the environment and human health.

One of the primary concerns with antibacterial soaps is the use of triclosan, a common ingredient in these products. Triclosan has been found to interfere with hormone regulation, contribute to antibiotic resistance, and harm aquatic ecosystems. In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of triclosan and 18 other ingredients in consumer antiseptic wash products, citing that they were not more effective than plain soap and water.

Moreover, experts believe that the overuse of antibacterial soaps may actually be contributing to the development of resistant bacteria, making it harder to fight infections. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has named antibiotic resistance as one of the biggest threats to global health.

Instead of relying on antibacterial soaps, the best way to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria is to practice good hygiene, such as regularly washing your hands with plain soap and water, using hand sanitizer when hand-washing is not an option, and avoiding close contact with individuals who are sick.
