Folate and Colorectal Cancer
Folate is a water-soluble B-vitamin that is important for DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation. It is naturally found in many foods, including leafy green vegetables, fruits, legumes, and fortified grains.
Research has suggested that a diet high in folate may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. However, this relationship is complex and not fully understood. For instance, some studies have suggested that high levels of folic acid supplements may actually increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer, especially in people with a history of colorectal adenomas or those who consume excessive alcohol.
Therefore, it is generally recommended to get folate from natural food sources rather than supplements, especially if you are at risk for colorectal cancer. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can provide sufficient amounts of folate and other important nutrients to support overall health and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, including colorectal cancer.
