Suicide and Mood Disorders
Suicide is a serious concern for individuals with mood disorders. Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide and to seek help if needed.
Some warning signs of suicide include:
- Talking about suicide or death
- Preoccupation with death or dying
- Giving away possessions
- Engaging in risky behavior
- Withdrawing from friends and family
- Increased use of drugs or alcohol
- Talking about feeling hopeless or trapped
- Expressing feelings of guilt or shame
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Giving verbal cues such as “I can’t take it anymore” or “I’m a burden to others”
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors, it is important to seek help immediately. Contact a mental health professional, call a crisis hotline, or go to the nearest emergency room. Suicide prevention is possible with proper treatment and support.
