Causes of Back Pain

Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  1. Strains and sprains: These are the most common causes of back pain and usually occur due to lifting heavy objects, sudden movements or poor posture.
  2. Herniated or bulging discs: The discs in your spine can become damaged or slip out of place, causing pressure on the nerves and resulting in pain.
  3. Spinal stenosis: This is a narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause pressure on the nerves and lead to pain, numbness or weakness.
  4. Osteoporosis: This condition causes the bones to become weak and brittle, making them more susceptible to fractures and resulting in back pain.
  5. Arthritis: Various forms of arthritis can affect the spine and cause pain and stiffness.
  6. Scoliosis: This is a condition where the spine curves to one side, causing back pain and discomfort.
  7. Infections: Certain infections can affect the spine and cause back pain, such as osteomyelitis or discitis.
  8. Cancer: Tumors that develop in the spine or elsewhere in the body can cause back pain, especially if they press on the nerves.
  9. Fibromyalgia: This is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness in the muscles and soft tissues.
  10. Psychological factors: Stress, depression, and anxiety can all contribute to back pain, either as a direct cause or as a result of tension and muscle strain.
